Soul Sound at Small Size The Soul Sound tuning at the Small size creates an interesting instrument. The lower head tension produces a warmer, rounder tone than the Small Freedom Rhythm, with softer slaps and a gentler overall voice. It does not produce the chest-vibrating bass of the Large Soul Sound — the 15 cm head and compact body simply cannot move enough air for that — but it has a noticeably mellower, more musical character than the same size in Freedom Rhythm tuning. Where the Small Freedom Rhythm is punchy and bright, the Small Soul Sound is warm and inviting. This combination — small size, warm sound — makes the Small Soul Sound the most intimate drum in the range.
